Prostate Cancer Q & A
When do I need to start prostate cancer screening?
Men aged 55-69 should follow the specific recommendations of their doctor to determine when to have prostate cancer screenings and what kind of screenings to have. Some men may need to start prostate cancer screening earlier based on risk factors and health history. After age 70, you may not need further screening. Dr. Rodriguez tailors screening recommendations for you.
Of course, if you experience potential symptoms of prostate cancer, you may need to have screening tests immediately.
What are the tests for prostate cancer?
At RJM Medical Services, Dr. Rodriguez may do a few different tests to check for prostate cancer, including:
Digital rectal exam
A digital rectal exam is a basic rectal exam in which Dr. Rodriguez gently examines your prostate for possible signs of cancer.
Blood tests
There are a couple of blood tests that can detect signs of prostate cancer. The prostate-specific antigen test reveals whether you have high levels of prostate-specific antigen, which is a possible sign of prostate cancer.
Transrectal ultrasonography with biopsy
If your digital rectal exam or blood test show possible prostate cancer, Dr. Rodriguez may perform an imaging test called transrectal ultrasonography. In this test, soundwaves create an image of your prostate. During this procedure, Dr. Rodriguez takes a small tissue sample for testing, which is called a biopsy.
Dr. Rodriguez recommends the right tests for you based on your health, age, and medical history.
What are the symptoms of prostate cancer?
Prostate cancer symptoms may include:
- Traces of blood in your urine or semen
- Weak urine stream
- Straining to begin urination
- Increased urinary frequency
- Burning or pain while urinating
- Persistent back, pelvic, or hip pain
- Painful ejaculation
Many of these symptoms can appear in other, noncancerous disorders, as well. For example, an enlarged prostate can cause a slow urine stream and increased urinary frequency, among other symptoms.
If you experience any symptoms of prostate cancer, it’s important to come in to RJM Medical Services to see Dr. Rodriguez as soon as possible. The earlier your diagnosis, the better.
